How to Win the Lottery

Winning the lottery might seem like a pipe dream sometimes. But actually, there are thousands of winners every day, all across the country. In fact, generally more than 1,000 people win over a million dollars from U.S. lotteries each year.

So, what's their secret? If you're wondering how to win the lottery, here are 7 lucky tips to keep in mind.

  • 1. Play.
Duh! You'll never win the lottery if you don't play. Statistically speaking, the more you play, the better your chances. If you only play once a year, your odds of winning are significantly lower. Remember, somebody is going to win that big jackpot eventually. The odds may be extreme for the larger jackpots, but somebody will eventually win. If you don't play, you have zero chances of winning.
  • 2. Don't spend a fortune on tickets.
The odds of winning a multi-state jackpot like Powerball are about 1 in 195,249,000. Even if you buy 200 tickets, your chance of winning barely increases, statistically. In other words, you're just as lucky buying 1 ticket per drawing as buying 200 tickets, so don't bother spending a fortune.
  • 3. Pick your own numbers.
It's easy to let the computer pick numbers for you … and theoretically, for the large jackpots, the odds of you picking the right numbers aren't much greater than the computer picking the right numbers. However, with smaller lottos, like Pick 4 or Pick 5, it may be in your favor to pick numbers that haven't appeared in drawings for a while. See tip #4 below.
  • 4. Beat the odds.
Lottery officials will tell you that the odds are the same for every drawing. This is true, however, the odds of certain numbers being drawn can fluctuate over time. For example, if the number 4 has not been drawn in any lottery for two months, statistically the odds improve that the number will be drawn soon. Pick your numbers based on which numbers are most likely to appear next. It's not guaranteed to help you win, but it could improve your odds.
  • 5. Use a lucky number generator.
If you're not sure which numbers are statistically more probable to appear, a lucky number generator can pick these numbers for you. The generator will choose numbers for you based on a scientifically validated process that singles out the luckiest numbers for each drawing.
  • 6. Stick with the same numbers.
If you are not using a lucky number generator, it may help you to pick the same numbers for each drawing. While the odds may be greatly stacked against you, over time your chances of winning will increase slightly as those numbers have yet to be picked.
  • 7. Try different games.
You might not have tons of luck winning the multi-million-dollar jackpots, so try some of the smaller games instead. Your odds of winning a Pick 4 are much greater than the multi-state lotteries. Try your luck at different games and see what happens!

Don't get discouraged when you don't win. And don't let your desire to win control your emotions. The lottery is meant to be a fun game with minimal risk – but if you spend too much of your income on these lotteries each day, it could become a problem. Keep your “bets” to a minimum and remember to have fun!
